Methodology notes
Coastal local authority definition
Coastal LAs are defined as those with a coastline boundary in the ONS Coastal Local Authorities dataset (2021 boundaries). Covers 70 lower-tier and unitary authorities across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Inland authorities excluded regardless of proximity to tidal waters.
Temporal coverage
All indicators cover calendar years 2020–2025. Where source data is released on a financial year basis (e.g. waste statistics: April–March), figures are attributed to the calendar year in which the majority of the period falls.
Regional aggregation
Local authority data is aggregated to NUTS1 coastal sub-regions using population-weighted averages for rate indicators (bathing water, recycling) and summation for stock indicators (erosion hectares, wind capacity, CO₂e). Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are treated as single coastal regions.
Calculator CO₂ methodology
CO₂ factor of 1.9g per thermal receipt is derived from Ingenico lifecycle analysis, validated against DEFRA GHG Conversion Factors 2023. Till roll cost based on ONS Retail Price Index 2024. Business-type multipliers derived from ONS Annual Business Survey coastal hospitality and retail sectors 2020–2025.
